Robert Price Builders’ Merchants Ltd is a family run independent business, with head office in Abergavenny. We are the largest independent builders’ merchant in South East Wales.
What is a builders’ merchant?
A builders’ merchant is a company which supplies materials to the construction sector.
Up to 85% of the built environment you see around you is supplied by Britain’s builders’ merchants. Merchants and the supply chain are crucial to the construction industry which contributes over £40 billion to the UK economy each year. A career in this essential commercial sector can be challenging, varied and rewarding.
Key responsibilities
- Counter sales and related administration.
- Use of point-of-sale terminal – training will be given.
- Customer service, dealing with customers in person and on the phone.
- Merchandising, price labelling and stock management.
- Picking orders, loading and unloading.
- Forklift driving and general warehouse duties.
- Ad-hoc cover on the Transit.

Essential skills & experience
- A confident communicator with a willingness to engage with customers and provide good service.
- Manual handling up to 25kg.
- GCSE Maths (minimum grade C) and English Language with good keyboard skills.
- Reliable, industrious, adaptable and quick to grasp new concepts.
- A proven team player.
- Naturally tidy and organised.
- Able to follow instructions and work unsupervised and with initiative.
- Driving licence.
Desirable skills & experience
- An interest in the construction and retail industries.
- Practical experience with building materials and their application.
- Experience in customer service, perhaps gained in retail sales or hospitality.
- Forklift licence – desirable but not essential, training can be given.
